A few Facts that you may not have known about Memorial Day:

After the Civil War ended in the spring of 1865 many towns and cities began holding spring time tributes, decorating graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and saying prayers.

In 1868 General John A Logan called for a nationwide day of remembrance, he chose May 30th and called it Decoration Day.

By 1890 all the “Northern” states had made it an official state holiday, while the Southern States continued to honor their fallen heroes on a different date until after WW I.

Memorial day as it gradually came to be known was observed on May 30th until 1968 when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act that established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May.  This Change went into effect in 1971 and established it as a Federal Holiday.

The American Flag should be flown at half staff until noon on Memorial Day the raised to the top of the staff for the remainder of the day.

There is a national moment of silence and remembrance observed at 3pm local time on Memorial Day.

This year I challenge you to not just think of Memorial Day as the official start of summer or a reason to have a picnic/BBQ and spend time with family and friends.  Take time to remember all the Americans that gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country and gave us all the freedoms that we enjoy today.

Prayers of Thanksgiving for the beautiful weather and the activity we were able to do.  Prayers for all the families and friends of soldiers who gave thier lives for us and our country, specificially:
