The Thang

Broke the PAX into 2 groups.  Moseyed through each station so I could demonstrate proper form for each exercise.  Simple execution of going in numerical order to each station and knocking out the exercises together before moseying to the next station.  I added in an element of attempting to have a couple PAX from each team memorize a section of Teddy Roosevelt’s “Citizenship in a Republic” speech, which is now widely known as the “Man in the Arena”.  I didn’t expect them to fully memorize it as the intent was to purposely make them fail so we could visit this as a lesson.

Circle of Trust

To finish up our lesson in facing failure and removing the natural fear we all have where we simply avoid doing some difficult things because we simply do not want to fail, I had the selected PAX recite their section of the speech.  I also challenged everyone to be honest with themselves and to identify that something that been avoiding and to tackle it, then, at a later date, come back and share their experience and outcome with us so that we can share in their learning and development.

Here’s the section of Roosevelt’s speech:

“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

I appreciate the feedback provided from the men during AARs.  While I knew I wanted to follow the intent of ensuring all PAX knew how to properly conduct each exercise, with the feedback given, I could have definitely done a couple things differently to save time instructing and dedicate more time to the beatdown.  The simplest solve would have been to demo and overview everything right after WoR.
