Story about two men in my life. James has been involved in AA for 30 years, it helped him live better and he has committed himself to helping others in that program and in life. He has a saying that he uses when he encounters people that are in great despair – “your phone weights less than a gun, do the easy work, pick up your phone and call me.” Erik is another friend that got into a bad spot two years ago, he got to the point where he would not talk or see anyone, hid in his basement and almost took his life. He did finally get into a treatment program and is much better. Last week when I saw Erik we were reminding ourselves had bad he had been, and he told me that the only person in the world that he would talk with – was James. I never knew that before, he said that he remembered his phone/gun saying – and called him when he was at his worst and that helped to save him. This is a great reminder for all of us that we never know what our words – positive, or negative – may have as an effect on people. Keep being positive.
