Introduction

This backblast is about 2 weeks overdue. I don’t remember what kind of a morning it was, but there were 14 Pax there at the World’s Greatest AO – Three Rivers – who showed up to claim their 1%. The job of YHC was to show them the way.

Here’s the important part:

What is Q?

-The fourth core principle is “Peer led in a rotating fashion.”  The one who leads the workout is the Q. Why “Q”?  Such a loser of a letter. I looked it up on Google, Q is actually the least used letter in the English language.  Can’t even do anything without it’s buddy “U”.  Hell, it doesn’t even make a unique sound, it can be mimicked with a “KW”.

-I think in Freed to Lead there is a reason why the pax leading the workout is called the Q, but I don’t remember.  I do know that Q is not the biggest, fastest, strongest, most used, or most essential letter.

-Likewise, the Q is not the biggest, fastest, or strongest of the Pax. He’s not even the guy in charge, that’s the site Q.

-So what is the Q?

-On my second Q, I wanted to out-do everyone on Big-Boys, and I did. In my mind I wanted to show that I belonged and I was tough.  I took it as a point of pride that most of them bailed on the big-boys before I was done. Until AAR. I was told I had too much Q-Juice, and needed to dial it back because I had lost most of the Pax.  Den Mother took me aside after the flag pic and explained it to me, and it hit me like a ton of bricks.

-The Q doesn’t need to push the Pax.  They are already out of bed at 4:30 to show up at an outdoor workout by 5:15.  They will push themselves.

-The Q does not need to be the fastest or strongest or lead from the 12.

-The Q is there to SERVE the Pax. He has a responsibility to design a workout to let the gazelles run, to let the hard chargers charge hard AND to get the FNG’s, Clydedales and those men who are still early on their personal fitness journey to get the most out of the workout for themselves.

– The Q is there FOR the Pax, all of the pax, each of them individually AND to keep them all together. He is not there to compete with them, he is there to create the environment for the competition of every man against himself.

-And it takes thought, preparation and care. He has to be prepared to pivot if weather or unexpected AO conditions force him to execute his contingency plan.

-He needs to let the Site Q do his job.

-He loves the Pax and he only wants what is best for them by creating a workout to challenge them each where they are.

-F3 is not about attracting all the fittest, strongest and most athletic dudes in town.  It is not about scaring away a sad clown who takes that first step and shows up at a workout and concludes this is all too intense for him.  It is about encouraging each man to work on creating a better version of himself 1% per day at a time regardless of his starting point.

-If you’re a man and you want to show up and you want to push yourself to get better both in your fitness and other aspects of your life, I am happy and honored to be your Q.
