The Thang

The PAX setup with their coupons in the south end of the parking lot (near the soccer field) and performed the movements below, working their way OYO up the grade levels. Each grade has an exercise associated with it. That moevement is completed, along with the movements of every grade below it. After each grade was completed, the PAX moseyed to the middle of the lot and back, then picked up with the next highest grade.  After grades 5, 8, and 12, a graduation lap around the entire lot was performed.

I called for a “Fire Drill” a few times randomly throughout the beatdown. The Fire Drill consisted of the PAX moseying to the soccer field and forming a circle and performing high knees in place. When the Q yelled “Fire!” the PAX drop to the ground, rolled to their right and performed a merkin, then rolled to their left and performed a merkin, then rose to their feet and continued the high knees. “Fire!” was called several times at random intervals.

Circle of Trust

Aerosmith’s song Amazing has a lyric that goes “Life’s a journey, not a destination.”

That quote is often attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson. What he really said was:

“To finish the moment, to find the journey’s end in every step of the road, to live the greatest number of good hours, is wisdom.”

What does this mean? Well, let me put it in the context of setting and striving to achieve goals.

James Clear came up with something called the Compass Theory. He says:

“The problem with a treasure hunt is that most people spend all of their time thinking about the treasure. The fastest way to get to a particular spot, however, is to set your compass and start walking.

The idea here is to commit to your goal with the utmost conviction. Develop a clear, single-minded focus for where you are headed. Then, however, you do something strange. You release the desire to achieve a particular outcome and focus instead on the slow march forward.

Pour all of your energy into the journey, be present in the moment, be committed to the path you are walking. Know that you are moving unwaveringly in one clear direction and that this direction is right for you, but never get wrapped up in a particular result or achieving a certain goal by a specific time.

In other words, your goal becomes your compass, not your buried treasure. The goal is your direction, not your destination. The goal is a mission that you are on, a path that you follow. Whatever comes from that path — whatever treasure you happen to find along this journey — well, that’s just fine. It is the commitment to walking the path that matters.”

Have a quote unquote goal in mind. But don’t lose sight of the steps you are taking to get there. Make it about those steps. Live in the moment.

Naked Man Moleskin

I asked for an AAR after this beatdown and got some great feedback. No one made it through all the grades, and a slight change to help make that happen next time is to not have the PAX run after each grade (only for the graduation laps). I’m looking forward to the next time I tee this up and make that change.

Doc Brown had his V-Site Q duties this morning and did great!
