September 11, this day brings to mind two events of which I will never forget.
The first event, Sept 11, 2001…On that morning, 19 terrorists hijacked four commercial airlinersscheduled to travel from the East Coast to California. The hijackers crashed the first two planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and aimed the next two flights toward targets in or near Washington, D.C., in an attack on the nation’s capital. The third team succeeded in striking the Pentagon, the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense in Arlington County, Virginia, while the fourth plane crashed in rural Pennsylvania during a passenger revolt. The September 11 attacks killed 2,977 people.
The other event took place exactly 20 years later on September 11, 2021 where several F3 Plainfield men met up at a VFW in Yorkville, to do a 9/11 memorial workout. A 60 plus year old man carried an American flag and led a small group of men on an out/back EC ruck and then gathered with the rest the men in attendance on the ball field where the men warmed up together, low crawled through the infield, ran some bases , and did a bunch of other seemingly crazy stuff. After it was over three men came to the center and introduced themselves to the rest of the men in attendance. One of the men in the circle explained where he worked, that he was a military veteran, and that he competitively fished for bass out of a kayak. The group named him Blue Gill.
Sept 11 holds a special place in my heart. In 2001, I remember evacuating my building in fears that our building (just across the highway) from the pentagon would be targeted next and 20 years later, a guy named Kyle Pearson (Bone Spur) gave me a ride over to the Yorkville VFW to get my first taste of F3 and F3 Plainfield. My life will never be the same and I’ll never forget!

Took a little convincing to get Meta to come to a run club, but he made the right decision (soak your knees brother). Sensodyne for sticking to what he told me (and more) on Monday. Cutler for not taking the easy out and staying home becasue he was down a vehicle. Dilbert for putting in the effort and also not having to run by himself this morning. Pullup for embracing the suck and getting prepped to deal with some elevation in Kentucky in less than a month. Mr. Belding for not hitting that snooze alarm one more time and for pushing despite maybe not being super motivated this morning?…:) Finally thanks to Mr. Kotter for grabbing the SQ duties this fine day and having our 6 and also for compromising on that EC Run 🙂
As I headed off to work and listened to the rebroadcast of the events that unfolded this morning 23 years ago, I was filled with those same emotions I experienced back then, the feelings of fear, anger, and sadness. I will never forget.
And on this date 3 years ago I also remember those initial feelings of exhaustion, invigoration, and camaraderie I experienced after my first F3 Plainfield beatdown of which I’m forever grateful and I will never forget. Note: Essentially I cannot forget as thats how I’ve felt after each beatdown since. 🙂
