Introduction

Learning about the 3 types of groups by traveling to the Community Playground, Organization Forest and Team Field.

Warm-O-Rama

OYO stretch during Disclaimer, Core Principles, Mission, and Credo. Arm circles, daisy pickers, Imperial Walkers, these guys. (5 min)

The Thang

Thang 1 – Community: 5 min.

The Q moves the PAX to the playground.   “Welcome to The Ridge Playground Community. Please don’t hurt yourselves.” No instruction other than that.  Awkward interaction ensues, with some PAX trying to follow Q’s lead (impossible when he lays on the only bench swing for a quick nap), others exercise on their own.

Thang 2Organization: 10 min.

PAX partner up. “Welcome to the Organization in the Forest. I’m your CEO. Spread out in the forest area by the playground. Complete activities with your partner at the direction of the Q.” CEO (Q) pulls a random exercise from his pocket (see exercises below) and runs through the forest telling groups what to do next. During one of the hill climbs, tells PAX to remain at the top for the annual meeting (briefly congratulate groups for their work toward the mission before sending them back to their spot with the next exercise).

When assigning the last exercise, instruct pax to sprint to football field when finished with it.

Thang 3Team: 20 min

PAX move to the soccer/football field; the mission is to complete the 1 & 10 thang and we will be staying together as a team.

100 yard field marked at 10 yard increments. Perform 10 Merkins, 1 Burpee (11’s) at the 10, hold plank for the 6, sprint the remaining 90 yards, recover jog back to the 20 and hold plank for the 6. Perform 9 Merkins, 2 Burpees, hold plank for the 6, sprint the remaining 80 yards, recover jog to the 30 and hold plank for the 6. Repeat until all 100 yards and 11’s have been completed.

Stay together, picking up six if needed (yell out if you have done extra Burpees for those struggling). Challenge each other to sprint as fast as possible, and offer incentives (10 minute rest count) when that effort has been shown.

Circle of Trust

A Group is a voluntary combination of two or more people.  Man is by nature a Group-forming animal since advantage is gained in numbers.  A group provides differentiation of skill and perspective, safety, and support.

Q Source defines 3 types of Groups.  They include a Community, Organization, and Team.

  • A Community is a group of people that are in close proximity but don’t share a mission.  “little is required of a Community Member other than to generally abide by its laws and mores so that the Group’s peace and harmony can be maintained.” During Thang 1 we were all together but were given no mission regarding what exercises to perform.
  • An Organization is a group that shares a mission but not proximity. “Organizations are defined by the Effectiveness with which they accomplish their Mission.” During Thang 2, our group had a mission to complete the given exercises but was not proximate.  Although we were given the same exercises to perform, we did them all in a little different order.  Over time, this group method would likely disintegrate due to the natural tendencies of its members and the lack of proximity. Those dedicated to the “Effective achievement of its Mission” (Lizards) would be overpowered or tired out by those with “the primary goal of the continuity of its own existence” (Bullfrog) and in turn would succumb to those that “only survive by feeding off of Bullfrog” (Leeches). The only hope is if “someone intercedes to Disruptively influence Movement to Advantage.” This is best done in Teams.
  • A Team is a group that is both proximate and shares a mission.  During Thang 3 we were proximate and shared the mission of completing the series of exercises together. Here’s three important points about Teams:

Teams “often arise organically under the leadership of a Member who identifies a Problem and sets out to solve it.”

“ Unlike the Member of a Community, the Member of a Team must do something rather than just be something to enjoy good standing.”

“While Communities and Organizations can thrive regardless of their size, a Team must be big enough to accomplish the Mission yet small enough that its teamwork is vibrant and uninhibited. It is within Teams that people have the most opportunity to lead. Thus, Teams are necessary to the leadership development process of any Group.”

In my life I can relate this concept of groups to the Christian Church. Jesus chose a team of 12, and showed them how to love and serve one another. When he departed, they formed house churches and revolutionized the world. Over time different organizations (denominations) formed, with both good and bad results. Most effective churches today value the concept of Small Groups, which are essentially teams on a mission. If they are just community small groups with no purpose, they die off quickly.

Hopefully this workout has helped you understand more about groups and inspired you to be a leader in the groups you are a part of, and Accelerate your group toward an Advantage.
