For my COT, I want to start with this quote, “Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize that they were the big things.”
It’s easy to get caught up in the thoughts of “I want this” or “I don’t have that” especially since our society today is a materialistic society. We constantly see ads for the newest phone or the newest luxury car. The idea that you will be so happy if you have that thing. For me, I can relate especially during my failing marriage. We would buy a new bigger house, a huge patio, deck, pool and other stuff because we would be happy if we had it. At the end of the day, none of that matters. I had all of that stuff but was miserable. I was in a marriage to someone that didn’t love me and simply wanted me for the financial security I gave her. After the divorce last year, I downsized to a simpler small house and at first I found myself having the occasional thought of feeling sad or frustrated that I was moving backwards in life and like starting over again financially. Through reflection and talking with friends I have made peace with my situation. The most important things in life are our relationships and not our material possessions. Here’s a great example:
My first ex wife and I went on a $20,000 2 week vacation to Singapore. Our relationship was terrible and we basically only went on the trip so she could visit her boyfriend who we actually stayed with for several days. We saw all kind of beautiful sights and places on that trip but that was one of the worst experiences of my life. She would have rather went without me. On the other hand, I went camping a few weeks ago with my girlfriend who is a really good person and we have a good connection. The cheap simple trip was a far better experience because I was with someone who I have a connection with and we both appreciate each other.
It’s the little things in life. Playing cards with a significant other watching the sunset on a beautiful summer night or taking a toddler to the park, its these seemingly average things that are really the big things in our life that we will remember and cherish.
My challenge to you is not lose sight of the little things in your life. The cup of coffee with friends after a workout, going for a walk with your M, or tossing a football around with your 6 year old are all seemingly simple things but it’s all these little things that lead us to finding joy and satisfaction.
