Introduction
I arrived at the AO around 0500. It was a great morning, temps in the 60s with a slight breeze. I setup the sandbags in the south portion of the lot, trying to make it a surprise for the PAX. The PAX that were out on an EC run came back to the lot through that section, and spoiled my surprise. 🙂

The Thang
THANG 1
Split into 3 groups of 5 (we had two M.A.S.H.ers)
Group 1 enters the Gauntlet, which was 6 movements, each to be completed by all members of the group in a rotating fashion:
- 25yd Farmer’s Carry w/ 2 coupons
- 15 SSH
- 10 Big Boys
- 60lb Sandbag – 10 Clean and Press
- 80lb Sandbag – 10 Squats
- 120lb Sandbag – 10 Deadlifts
Group 2 completed 1 1/4 mile loop around the parking lot and then replaced Group 1 in the Gauntlet (who then ran 2 loops around the parking lot).
Group 3 completed 2 1/4 mile loops around the parking lot and then replaced Group 2 in the Gauntlet.
THANG 2
The PAX came back to the flags and formed a single-file line with their coupon in front of them. The QIC asked a PAX in line for a number between 1 and 5, and then a random question such as “What is your first name?” The nth letter of that name was then used to determine the movement and prescribed reps the group would perform. The randomness resulted in a mosey, SSH, Catalina Wine Mixers (at least twice), burpees, and other movements.
MARY
Captain Thors to 7×28 (lots of moaning and groaning here; I was going to stop at 5×20 but the misery motivated me to continue)
Merkin Ring of Fire (3 Merkins)
Circle of Trust
I spoke about being a good neighbor, and challenged the men to get to know their neighbors and make it clear they understand they are there for them when needed. I shared the story of my next-door neighbor needing my wife and me a few nights prior. Here is the story i shared from that night:
My neighbor Pauline’s dog Pepper died in my arms less than an hour ago. He was a 15 year old Maltese-Shih Tzu mix that lived a long, spoiled life with his owner Pauline treating him like royalty. Pepper was tiny in stature but huge in attitude, always barking at the bigger dogs in the neighborhood, making sure they knew he would kick their ass if Pauline would just let him loose. Pauline called me about an hour ago and told me Pepper wasn’t acting like himself. She knew what was happening but didn’t want to speak it out loud. Mary and I rushed over to Pauline’s and comforted her and Pepper in his final moments, Mary holding Pauline and me holding Pepper. Pauline is a widow and lives with her 80+ year old mother who is in the early stages of dementia. Pauline knows she is going to have to explain to her mother every day that their Pepper is no longer alive, ripping the wound open day after day. Please pray for Pauline as she mourns the loss of Pepper, and continues to care for her mother, both of them without their furry companion that offered a needed distraction. Also, I implore you to check in on your neighbors and let them know you are there for them.
Naked Man Moleskin
This was a pinch-hit Q for me. TPS Report was scheduled to lead, but had a situation come up late Monday night and asked me to step in. A year ago I likely would have panicked as I surely would have needed more time than I was given to prepare to lead a workout. But now I took it in stride and put together plans in 10 minutes. If you are reading this and you aren’t to the point where you can lead a workout with little notice, get on the Q Sheet at a regular cadence and strive to get to that point. Qing beatdowns provides a great opportunity to practice and improve your leadership skills, self-confidence, and fitness all at the same time.
