Introduction

This was a first round battle in the Kind of the Q competition and it was a lot of fun and still a total smokefest.

Warm-O-Rama

Bunny Hill did the Warmarama for us.  Confession, I was so focused on my upcoming Q duties that I didn’t really make a mental note of what exercises took place. Once Bunny Hill decided we were warmed up, he turned the leadership reigns over to me. So I had everyone grab their coupons and mosey over to the the hill.

The Thang

I had the task of leading the first half of the workout. I kicked things off with an “un-BEAR-AB-le Ladder.” Started with a 25 coupon curl buy-in.  Then with cones at 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 yards bear crawl to first cone, do 10 American Hammers, crawl bear back to start bear crawl to first cone, do 10 AH, bear crawl to second cone, do 20 shoulder taps, crawl back to start you get idea… 30 yard mark was 30 flutters, 40 yard was 40 LBCs, 50 yard was 50 plank jacks.

With some time still on the clock we played a little red light green light.  One PAX was on top of the hill in a squat position with their back facing the remaining PAX on the bottom of the hill.  These PAX would begin ascending the hill while rifle carrying their coupons.  When the PAX at the top of the hill turned around while  shouting red light, any PAX who continued moving or dropped their coupon would need to do five penalty burpees.  Eventually a PAX made it to the top and we started another round. Got in couple rounds, before we needed to head back to the parking lot for 1040’s portion of the beatdown.

One in the lot, 1040 EZ has a divide into two groups. Each group would move to one of the stations he had set up and perform the listed number of reps for each exercise he has on the posted signage.  At one of the stations our largest coupon “Fat Amy” made an appearance, and PAX were given the option to do lesser overall chest presses if the elected to use the heavier coupon.

The number of total reps remained the same at each station we rotated to, but toward the end they seem to really add up, and no one was sad when 6:00 rolled around.

Circle of Trust

1040 shared that the total reps at each station equalled the age of his mother, who had passed away just a couple weeks ago.  Even though he was not feeling well and running later than planned in the morning, he pushed himself to be there and lead in her honor!

I then shared that at the start of Monday’s run club Happy Camper had us all verbally state what are goal was.  For some it was get in 4+ miles in addtion to the 2 they had already EC’d (Bluegill).  For other mere mortals, it was to get in 3 miles or run at certain consistent pace.  When we were finished everyone had achieved or exceeded their goal, including a PR for Quatro who had mistakenly said a faster mile time than he had intended, but nonetheless had achieved it.

That made me think that we should always try to have a specific goal in mind when we show up for a F3 workout. I know someone you who aren’t as dense as me, probably have already been doing this, but I’ve been showing up for two years, and unless the Q prompted us to target something specific, I’ve just had a general goal to (a) survive the workout and (b) push myself in the process. Both worthwhile ends, but not necessarily something I can easily hold myself accountable for.  So over the next two week or month, try to look at the preblast and, whenever possible, write down or come up with a trackable goal for each beatdown.  If there is not enough information during in the preblast, listen carefully to the instruction for each Thang, and try to come up with something on the spot. When you are done, answer yourself in writing, what did I hope to get out of coming this morning? Was it achieved? After a couple weeks, review your tracking. What are the trends, are you meeting or exceeding your goals? Could you be pushing yourself more?

Naked Man Moleskin

King of the Q is in part about having some good natured competition, but it is also an honor to get to Q a workout alongside a PAX like 1040EZ. A HIM who leads by example everyday, and who even when he is going through a difficult season, still put in the effort to come up with a challenging workout and to get out front and lead, as tough as it may be in the moment.
