Introduction
I arrived to the Ridge around 0445 to get coffee setup in the pavilion. Vern, Skidmark, and 5-Putt were there too, and EH’d me into doing a 1.5 mile EC run with them. It felt great to get that in before the beatdown, and it allowed me to survey the areas we were going to use at the far end of the hill. It was a little wet but nothing that would impede the group from using the area.
When we got back to the flags, I ran my speaker to the far end of the parking lot to have it in place for Thang 1. I made it back to the flags just in time, around 0514. Shooter seemed concerned that I wasn’t around as 0515 was daring nearer; I think he knows what Skidmark’s backup beatdown is and he didn’t want any part of that.

Circle of Trust
Music trivia time. What song has the lyric: “Life’s a journey, not a destination.”? No PAX could name the song, so then I tried singing it. That didn’t help, in fact I think it made it worse. The song is Amazing by Aerosmith.
That quote is often attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson. He never said that directly, but what he did say was:
“To finish the moment, to find the journey’s end in every step of the road, to live the greatest number of good hours, is wisdom.”
What does this mean? Well, let me put it in the context of setting and striving to achieve goals. James Clear has an idea he calls the Compass Theory:
“The problem with a treasure hunt is that most people spend all of their time thinking about the treasure. The fastest way to get to a particular spot, however, is to set your compass and start walking.
The idea here is to commit to your goal with the utmost conviction. Develop a clear, single-minded focus for where you are headed. Then, however, you do something strange. You release the desire to achieve a particular outcome and focus instead on the slow march forward.
Pour all of your energy into the journey, be present in the moment, be committed to the path you are walking. Know that you are moving unwaveringly in one clear direction and that this direction is right for you, but never get wrapped up in a particular result or achieving a certain goal by a specific time.
In other words, your goal becomes your compass, not your buried treasure. The goal is your direction, not your destination. The goal is a mission that you are on, a path that you follow. Whatever comes from that path — whatever treasure you happen to find along this journey — well, that’s just fine. It is the commitment to walking the path that matters.”
Have a “goal” in mind. But don’t lose sight of the steps you are taking to get there. Make it about those steps. Live in the moment.
Naked Man Moleskin
This workout went pretty much according to plan. The Abyss Merkins + Clock Merkins, + BLIMP work really hit my chest hard.
We didn’t get back to the flags until 0557, so time for Mary was limited. Next time I will have the group head back from the hill a bit earlier.
