Introduction
I woke up Thursday morning and skipped posting. Between poor sleep and the cold weather, I just wasn’t feeling it. After my morning routine, I opened Slack and saw there were still open Qs for both Friday and Saturday. Right then I realized I probably wasn’t the only one not “feeling it.”
What really pissed me off was the fact that I’d given in to my own inner bitch. If we all did that, F3 wouldn’t be what it is today. Cherry‑picking only the easy or comfortable days isn’t leaning into F3 the way I want it represented.
So I stopped sulking, stepped up, and grabbed the Q. I really didn’t want to workout in -20F windchill, but who does?
Warm-O-Rama
I told the PAX to expect a HOT start. Once we circled up QIC checked to make sure we all had hand warmers and headed out. WOR was done on the front end of our pearls as we headed for the neighborhood to try and find cover.
The Thang
The THANG was Pearls on a String. QIC lead the first few stops and then we did a round robin, letting each PAX take turns.
Circle of Trust
With the weather being so extreme, I limited my call‑outs to PAX I knew were most likely just dodging the discomfort. Many of the men who showed up had also supported me recently at The Grove for another beatdown I Q’d, where the wind chills were once again below ‑25°F.
I used my COT to personally thank each of them for showing up and supporting me. I also reminded them that our region needs men who are willing to lead by example—to step up in adversity and show others how to lead when things are uncomfortable.
Naked Man Moleskin
Getting out in extreme weather isn’t for everyone. Many see it as dangerous and feel the risk outweighs the reward. Some M’s or 2.0’s may question your decision or worry about your safety. Everyone’s situation is different, and if you’ve never done it before, it can be incredibly intimidating.
If you ever find yourself in this position—especially if you’re on Q or serving as SQ—please reach out in advance. Share your concerns, privately if needed, with the SLT or a trusted veteran. No one will force you to do something you’re uncomfortable with. The men of this region have each other’s six, but we can’t pick you up if we don’t know you’re down.
