Cliff Young, an Australian potato farmer, became an iconic figure in endurance running after his unexpected victory in the 1983 Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon at the age of 61.
He completed the 544-mile race in 5 days, 15 hours, and 4 minutes, finishing 10 hours ahead of the next runner, all while running non-stop for five days. Young’s win was not just about physical endurance, but also about his unique running style and humble nature.

The Race:
In 1983, Cliff Young entered the inaugural Westfield Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon wearing overalls and work boots.
The “Cliffy Shuffle”:
He ran at a slow, shuffling pace, initially falling behind the other runners who were following a traditional sleep strategy of running during the day and resting at night.
Unconventional Strategy:
Young, unaware of the typical race strategy, ran through the night, gradually gaining ground on the sleeping competitors.
Unexpected Victory:
He finished the race in record time, surpassing all expectations and finishing ten hours ahead of the next runner.
Humility and Generosity:
After winning, Young famously split the $10,000 prize money with the other runners, stating he hadn’t run for the money.
Legacy:
Cliff Young’s story became a national legend in Australia. His perseverance, unique running style (“Cliffy shuffle”), and generosity inspired many. He continued running for various causes throughout his life and even set a world record in a six-day race at the age of 78.
So what’s my point?
The message here is that there isn’t only one way to do things in life and win. When we look at school, training, bigger goals we often think that there needs to be a specific path. That path has worked for some and not all. By focusing on your plan and your path you may end up winning the race without expectating to.

The equipment was a challenge. Weight needed to be adjusted based on PAX weight. Ideally everyone has either 45lb or 35lb plates with grips to be utilized. Over 200lbs 45lb plates and 135lbs – 200lbs 35lb plates.
Will run this one back and focus on the time as it’s simple to setup and we now have the weight dialed in.
